Have you ever wondered what life might look like now had you received the care you needed as a child? By care, I mean care from a caregiver or from school? What if you had been fully heard? Not told to 'just try harder'. Do you still carry the labels that were put on you as a child ' you're lazy', 'you're difficult', 'you're needy'?
All of us carry that kid around inside of us, and when there are unhealed parts of us they show up in conflict or when we're facing difficulty or hurt. It takes work to recognise that you're the adult now, you get to make decisions, you are the one in control. By exploring our childhood we can begin to understand our patterns and behaviours better and we can begin to have more compassion for who we are and to make better choices if our choices harm us.
By understanding ourself better we can seek to make adjustments, either for ourself or to be able to ask at work or loved ones to help us. To know that we have limits and pushing through wont work. We end up exhausted burnt out or even ill.
Probably the biggest healer is self compassion. Not beating ourself up for the things we cant do. Even if we were able to do them for many years. Therapy can help us explore how we view ourselves and how much of that comes from our childhood. To be able to advocate for ourself, put in boundaries that protect us and our energy and embrace who we are.
